To Conclude my Media B/Log.

I will seiously miss writing these entries. It's a way of releasing one's feelings on a movie or a commercial. I think I will continue over time commenting on things that should be seen and what shouldn't. Knowing about how media affects all of us is something that all people whould learn because we are all affected whether we like it or not. We need to change our ways of being ignorant of what we see or hear. We should take the initiative to let people know what is wrong and right. I thank my family and friends for inspiring me to do these things. And to you Ms. Platon for being so patient with us in teaching Media Awareness, our whole batch owes you so much. Thank you.

Racism Against the Blacks

I always wondered why my cousins thought that saying the word "black" was funny. I later discovered about the world of racism. The "blacks" are the African people, they have been ridiculed and battered by the world physically and emotionally that's why they have been quite a rebellious group against the "whites" which would be the Americans.

This all started way back in history during the times of the movie "Amistad" where the African people were sold into slavery by the Spanish and somehow made it into America. There were treated cruelly by both countries and had horrible experiences for generations. It was Abraham Lincoln who finally realized that the "blacks" should be freed and that he did. We still see the effects of this history today, everyday. They are called "Niggers", it's like a cuss word for the Americans and the Africans.

An example of this racism would be the movie "Aeon Flux". My cousin's , who are ever so observant, pointed out that there are about 4 characters in the movie who are 'black' but there is a girl there, one of the leads who had a hand transplant.

HANDS ON FEET = MONKEY LOOKING PERSON

Even the "Blacks" talk about the ridicule of them being "black". It's just sick humor for me. Some people die because of this discrimination, we are in modern times. We should realize already that we are all people. I look forward to the day that we no longer hear or see the racism against our fellow humans.

Frenzy Commercial

Setting: general store or pick up store

Characters:
Boy (looks about 19 yrs old, wearing a greenshirt and holding a green and orange ice cream cone)
Girl (looks abut 18 yrs old, wearing a plain light shirt and a bag)
Old woman (carries a bag of oranges with her)

Script:
(Boy looks down at a shelf/rack)
Boy: Mint?
(Girl looks at him up and down)
Girl: Nah
(boy looks down again)
Boy: Orange?
(Old woman with oranges passes by)
(They both look at each other)
Both: Banana!
(Take the banan flavored condom and leave)

Ending statement: Frenzy Condoms...Lets get Frenzy!

My initial reaction was, "WHAT!?!". I mean, before their commercials weren't that bad. The commercials before showed a gym/club of people showing a pack of Frenzy or something. I thought to myself, "Good thing it doesn't show anything bad for the kids...yet". But when this came out, it felt bad for me because it supported the fact that you can have pre-marital sex just as long as you buy a condom.

It just freaks me out knowing that children of all ages might be wondering and asking their moms, "Mommy, what's a condom?". It just horrifies me. I can confess that I'm a sheltered child but children donnt need to know these things. The Boy was holding an ice-cream cone that was green and orange. He suggested that they take the Mint or Orange one. Im pretty much guessing that that Ice cream cone is mint and oranged flavored. Just like the Chupa-chups commercial with the motto "The Pleasure of Sucking".

*sigh* It makes me sad to know how explicit the TV world is these days, with all the 'scenes' on One Tree Hill or O.C. type of TV shows that we all love. It's a new age but it doesnt mean that we have to be this 'showy' of the world at night.

Charter Change Commercial

I just recently watched a commercial promoting "cha-cha". It showed a Lola who broke her favorite cup, given by her late husband. Her grand daughter gave her a new one saying "I love Lola". The granddaughter asked,"O Lola, nagustohan nyo po ba?". The Lola replied, "Oo, gusto ko". Then the commercial ended with the words, "SUPPORT CHARTER CHANGE".

I never liked talking about politics, especially in taxi's. The taxi drivers would argue about their favorite president or senator. It's always crazy how they talk about them. This recent commercial wanted the people to support their move on "cha-cha" in the future. I just dont get the fact that linking old Lola's and cups to Charter change will help. Many of the Filipino's today are torn apart by this decision. My mom said they promote it on an emotional level, so that it will soften the Filipino hearts. But for me, it kind of made me even mad because they were using a story that has absolutely no relation to Politics to promote Politics.

The government shouldn't use commercials to promote presidents, senators, councils, mayors and such. For me, this making of the commercial was a wrong move by the government. But on the other hand, we will just keep on judging the government anyways.

Fight Club trailer

Fight Club

Since I dont have cable, watching a movie for me is going to a theatre with friends and family but definitely not on TV. But one fateful night Studio 23 featured this movie with Brad Pitt, so I decided to watch. I found how they made the movie so interesting. It came from a book made by, Chuck Palahniuk. The man is called "the narrator" (Edward Norton). He is the main character in the story, he basically hates his job and has insomnia. He actually fins himself "waking up" in some different place.

He decides to go to a support group to find people to talk to, and meets Marla Singer (Helena Bonham-Carter) who gets under his skin. On a business flight he meets Tyle Durden (Brad Pitt), a charming soap salesman. When he comes to his apartment he finds it blown up and calls up people to find a place to stay and finds Tyler. Tyler challenges him to a fight near a bar, and suddenly a small crowd gathers around. The Narrator finds himself more alive in fighting than ever. He and Tyler hit it off and start "Fight Club", an underground sensation that has men fighting but is a closely guarded secret.

The Fight Club had 8 rules:
  1. You don't talk about fight club.
  2. You don't talk about fight club
  3. If someone says stop, goes limp, even if he's just faking it, the fight is over.
  4. Only two guys to a fight.
  5. One fight at a time.
  6. They fight without shirts or shoes.
  7. The fights go on as long as they have to.
  8. If this is your first night at fight club, you have to fight.
I found it so interesting I finished the movie and called my whole family to watch. In the end The Narrator gets conflicts with Tyler and Marla and discovers that Tyler is his seperate personality. I found it so mind twisting and wonderfully engaging, I was and am in love with the movie.

Here's a link for some reviews which liked and disliked the movie: rotten tomatoes

I liked the fact that they used different effects for the movie. The story is amazing, although the ending was sort of surprising. I loved the idea and how they carried out the Narrator's story. The actor's were good and funny at times. A bit of violence to it but enjoyable just the same.

It's on the top 5 movies for me.
